IPL 2020 will be start in september 19 says BCCI sources

IPL set to start on September 19, final on November 8, say BCCI sources

IPL in all likelihood will start on September 19 (Saturday) and the final will be held on November 8 (Sunday), a senior BCCI official told
New Delhi: The eagerly-awaited Indian Premier League will start on September 19 in the United Arab Emirates with the final slated on November 8, well-placed BCCI sources told PTI on Thursday.

While the IPL Governing Council will meet next week to chalk out the final details and approve the schedule, it is understood that the BCCI has informally intimated the franchises about the plan.
"IPL in all likelihood will start on September 19 (Saturday) and the final will be held on November 8 (Sunday). It is a 51-day window which will suit the franchises as well as the broadcasters and other stakeholders," a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
The IPL has been made possible by the ICC's decision to postpone the October-November T20 World Cup in Australia owing to the COVID-19 pandemic due to which the host country expressed its inability to conduct the event.

While there were speculations that IPL will start from September 26, the BCCI decided to advance it by a week in order to ensure that the Indian team's tour of Australia is not jeopardised.
"The Indian team will have a mandatory quarantine of 14 days as per Australian government rules. A delay would have sent the plans haywire.
"The best part is that 51 days is not at all a curtailed period and there will be much less double headers. We could stick to original five double headers in seven week window," the official said.

It is expected that with each and every team needing at least a month's time to train, the franchises will be leaving base by August 20 which gives them exactly four weeks time to prepare.

Amazon in talks to buy 9.9% stake in Reliance retail arm: Report

Amazon wants a preferred, strategic stake in Reliance Retail for JioMart, according to reports

JioMart, the e-commerce venture of Reliance's retail arm, was launched in May

BENGALURU: Amazon.com Inc is in talks to buy a 9.9% stake in the retail arm of Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries Ltd, ET Now reported on Thursday, citing sources.
Amazon wants a preferred, strategic stake in Reliance Retail for JioMart, according to tweets by the television channel.
JioMart, the e-commerce venture of Reliance's retail arm, was launched in May and poses a formidable challenge to Amazon.com's local unit and Walmart Inc's Flipkart.
Earlier this year, Amazon India launched a program to add small local shops on its platform after India went into a lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus outbreak.

An Amazon spokeswoman through email said the company does not comment on speculation, while Reliance did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Reliance, controlled by Asia's richest man, Mukesh Ambani, has raised around $20 billion since late April for its digital arm, including from Alphabet Inc's Google and Facebook Inc.

Railway looking to increase freight revenue

Railway looking to increase freight revenue

Railways expects earnings from the passenger segment to take a beating.

NEW DELHI : Indian Railways is looking to substantially grow its freight revenues as it expects earnings from the passenger segment to take a beating due to the covid-19 crisis.

While the national transporter plans to start more passenger trains, the surge in covid-19 cases and subsequent lockdowns in many states have forced it to put the plans on hold. In fact, only 230 special trains, out of the 13,000 trains it operated daily in pre-covid times are running now.

Last week, railway board chairman Vinod Kumar Yadav said the it is banking on freight revenue this fiscal year to at least match up to last year’s overall revenue generation.

“The number of passenger trains running is very less. In the coming months, there are less chances of train services getting back to normal…we are aware that revenue from passenger segment will not be up to previous year’s level. Freight earnings should be much more than last year, so that we are able to match the overall earning," he had said.

The railways expects to earn ₹1.47 trillion from freight in FY21, while passenger revenue was estimated at ₹61,000 crore, according to the Union budget estimates. However, railway ministry officials said that the estimates are being re-worked due to the covid-led disruptions. Freight revenue fell nearly to a third year-on-year in the June quarter to ₹22,266 crore, as volumes declined by 21.4% to 241.55 million tonnes.

The railways is, therefore, working towards simplifying its freight policy, rationalizing rates, and increasing the speed of goods trains, with minimal passenger traffic. It will also work on marketing initiatives, and has decided to set up business development units across railway zones to connect with concerned stakeholders.

Record corona cases in world last 100 hours crosses million mark

For first time, world records 1 million coronavirus cases in 100 hours

The number of cases globally is around triple that of severe influenza illnesses recorded annually, according to the World Health Organization

The United States, with more than 3.6 million confirmed cases, is still seeing huge daily jumps in its first wave of COVID-19 infections

Global coronavirus infections passed 14 million on Friday, according to a Reuters tally, marking the first time there has been a surge of 1 million cases in under 100 hours.

The first case was reported in China in early January and it took three months to reach 1 million cases. It has taken just four days to climb to 14 million cases from 13 million recorded on July 13.

The United States, with more than 3.6 million confirmed cases, is still seeing huge daily jumps in its first wave of COVID-19 infections. The United States reported a daily global record of more than 77,000 new infections on Thursday, while Sweden has reported 77,281 total cases since the pandemic began.

Despite the surging cases, a cultural divide is growing in the country over wearing masks to slow the spread of the virus, a precaution routinely taken in many other nations.

U.S. President Donald Trump and his followers have resisted a full-throated endorsement of masks and have been calling for a return to normal economic activity and reopening schools despite the surging cases.

Other hard-hit countries have “flattened the curve" and are easing lockdowns put in place to slow the spread of the novel virus while others, such as the cities of Barcelona and Melbourne, are implementing a second round of local shutdowns.

The number of cases globally is around triple that of severe influenza illnesses recorded annually, according to the World Health Organization.

The pandemic has now killed more than 590,000 people in almost seven months, edging towards the upper range of yearly influenza deaths reported w

Latest news corona vaccine could come tomorrow by Oxford

Positive news on Oxford coronavirus vaccine could come tomorrow: Report

The developers of the vaccine earlier this month said they are encouraged by the immune response they have seen in trials so far

The Oxford vaccine project is already into the final stage of human trials.

Positive news on initial trials of the University of Oxford's potential COVID-19 vaccine that has been licensed to AstraZeneca could be announced as soon as Thursday, ITV's political editor Robert Peston said, citing a source. Phase III trials of the COVID vaccine candidate, involving thousands of human volunteers, began last month in Brazil.

"I am hearing there will be positive news soon (perhaps tomorrow) on initial trials of the Oxford Covid-19 vaccine that is backed by AstraZeneca," Peston said in a blog post.

"Apparently the vaccine is generating the kind of antibody and T-cell (killer cell) response that the researchers would hope to see."

"If the Oxford vaccine is proven effective, it could go into mass production as early as September," he said.

AstraZeneca Plc climbed 5% in London after ITV.com reported that The Lancet medical journal is due to release positive news on the vaccine the company is developing with the University of Oxford researchers.

More than a dozen different vaccines are in various stages of testing worldwide, including in Britain, China, India, and the U.S.

The Russian defense ministry today said it had developed a "safe" coronavirus vaccine following clinical trials on a group of volunteers. The ministry said 18 people had participated in the research and were discharged without "serious adverse events, health complaints, complications or side effects".

Another vaccine maker Moderna Inc said on Tuesday it plans to start a late stage clinical trial for its COVID-19 vaccine candidate on or around July 27. Moderna said it will conduct the trial at 87 study locations.

World threat from covid-19 is around 1.8 times the number of active cases. In many states, the number of daily discharges from hospitals is more than that of daily admissions.

Covid-19 cases are unequal in distribution in India. “As much as 86% of total active covid-19 cases are confined to just 10 states, while 50% of active cases are in two states, which shows that the spread of covid-19 is not happening uniformly across the country," said Rajesh Bhushan, officer on special duty (OSD), in the health ministry.

As testing is critical in containing the spread, the World Health Organization (WHO) has come out with a document underlining the need for comprehensive surveillance and testing of suspect covid-19 cases, stating that testing 140 people per day per 1 million population would be comprehensive.

“As many as 22 states are doing more than 140 covid-19 tests per day per million. Centre is asking states and Union territories to increase testing so that we proceed towards the guidelines given by the WHO. There were 101 covid-19 RT-PCR testing labs in mid-March, while today there are 1,206 RT-PCR testing labs and 280 rapid antigen testing centres," Bhushan said.

The government has also conducted a sero survey to find the presence of coronavirus among people in containment zones. The ICMR said that at present stratification of data collected for the sero survey in Delhi and its analysis is being done. As many as 22,800 blood samples were collected for this particular sero survey till 5 July.

The health ministry said that the national covid-19 fatality rate is 2.6% and it is coming down.

There is no charger use in apple 12 latest update

Opnion: You don't need that charger in the box

Leaks are suggesting both Apple and Samsung are preparing to sell smartphones - such as the rumored iPhone 12 and Samsung Galaxy S30 - that don’t come with a charging block or cable in the box.

Instead, these companies are likely to ask you to buy a separate charger or use your existing tech that you already have in your home. This has proved divisive, as with any manufacturer losing a key part of their tech, but I believe this is the right thing to do. Inmy opinion, it's far past the time manufacturers took on more responsibility for the waste that comes from the average person purchasing new technology, and dropping the unnecessary accessories in the box is a bigger step toward curving e-waste than you may expect.

According to trusted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 12 won’t have those EarPods headphones - the cheap, wired headset you get for free - or a charger in the box when it lands later in the year.

A further report - soon after this iPhone 12 rumor - has suggested Samsung is deliberating on whether to follow suit in 2021 with some of its smartphones. Neither of these reports suggested exact models, or whether it'd be for all devices.

If this proves true, it means your phone won't come packaged with accessories. Why? Because it's very likely you already have what you need.

According to statistics provided by the European Parliament, the world generates 50 million metric tonnes of e-waste every year. That's everything from your broken kit to companies replacing your work laptop.

A variety of rumors have suggested the 2021 iPhone may be the first portless device from the company, and we've seen concept phones from other manufacturers that show how the idea may work.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) praised the efforts taken to contain the coronavirus in Mumbai's Dharavi while saying that only aggressive action combined with national unity and global solidarity can turn this pandemic around.

"There are many examples from around the world that have shown that even if the outbreak is very intense, it can still be brought back under control," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO DG. "And some of these examples are Italy, Spain, and South Korea, and even in Dharavi - a densely packed area in the megacity of Mumbai - a strong focus on community engagement and the basics of testing, tracing, isolating and treating all those that are sick is key to breaking the chains of transmission and suppressing the virus," the UN Health Body Chief.

The WHO DG emphasized on the need for leadership, community participation and collective solidarity.

Mint COVID Tracker: At the current pace, India’s coronavirus tally could hit 1 million in seven days

Assam is now reporting the second biggest growth rate in active cases as well as deaths among major states, after Karnataka

India’s total coronavirus case tally is set to hit the 1 million mark by next Friday if it continues to rise at the same pace as since mid-June, a Mint analysis based on the latest health ministry data showed. During this period, cases have been growing at an average daily growth rate of 3.5%, taking the total number close to 800,000 now.

Overall, India has 276,685 active cases—or patients still under treatment—as of Friday morning, while 21,604 deaths have been attributed to the infection, the latest health ministry data showed. Active cases rose 20% in the last seven days, in line with the week-ago period (26 June to 3 July). The seven-day spike in deaths is 19%, compared to 20% in the preceding week. The seven-day rolling averages have been considered for these calculations since they minimize the effect of volatile and delayed reporting.

Over the past few weeks, new infections and deaths have been rising faster in India than in most other badly-hit countries. The country has the third-highest number of active cases, after the United States and Brazil. The toll is the eighth highest in the world. Among high-fatality countries (more than 5,000 deaths), India has recorded the biggest spike in deaths as well as active cases over the past week.

With cases rising, India’s health facilities and workforce continue to be under severe strain.

India exploring legal options in the case relating to Kulbhushan Jadhav

The death penalty was awarded previously by a Pakistani military court for alleged espionage.
India on Thursday said it was exploring legal options in a case relating to Indian death-row convict Kulbhushan Jadhav, day after Islamabad said that he had refused to file a review petition against his sentence.

The death penalty was awarded previously by a Pakistani military court for alleged espionage.

"At this stage, we are assessing our legal options. We will do our utmost to protect the life of the Indian national," Indian foreign ministry spokesman Anurag Srivastava said.
Jadhav, a retired Indian Navy officer, was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on charges of espionage and terrorism in April 2017. Weeks later, India approached the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for denial of consular access to Jadhav and challenging the death sentence awarded to him by the Pakistani military court. The ICJ had then restrained Pakistan from executing him.

In July last year, the Hague-based court ruled that Pakistan must undertake an "effective review and reconsideration" of the conviction of Jadhav. It had also ruled that Jadhav be granted consular access without delay.

On Wednesday, Pakistan said Jadhav refused to file an appeal in the Islamabad High Court against his conviction despite being offered the option. India slammed the Pakistani statement calling it a "farce" and said Jadhav was "coerced" to forego his rights. Srivastava on Wednesday said Pakistan's claim reflected its attempt to "mask" its continuing "reticence to implement" the ICJ judgment in the case in "letter and spirit."
He had said that Pakistan is only seeking to create an "illusion of remedy" in the case, and asserted that India will do its "utmost" to protect Jadhav and ensure his safe return to India. "Pakistan's claim that Jadhav, who got arrested.
