World threat from covid-19 is around 1.8 times the number of active cases. In many states, the number of daily discharges from hospitals is more than that of daily admissions.

Covid-19 cases are unequal in distribution in India. “As much as 86% of total active covid-19 cases are confined to just 10 states, while 50% of active cases are in two states, which shows that the spread of covid-19 is not happening uniformly across the country," said Rajesh Bhushan, officer on special duty (OSD), in the health ministry.

As testing is critical in containing the spread, the World Health Organization (WHO) has come out with a document underlining the need for comprehensive surveillance and testing of suspect covid-19 cases, stating that testing 140 people per day per 1 million population would be comprehensive.

“As many as 22 states are doing more than 140 covid-19 tests per day per million. Centre is asking states and Union territories to increase testing so that we proceed towards the guidelines given by the WHO. There were 101 covid-19 RT-PCR testing labs in mid-March, while today there are 1,206 RT-PCR testing labs and 280 rapid antigen testing centres," Bhushan said.

The government has also conducted a sero survey to find the presence of coronavirus among people in containment zones. The ICMR said that at present stratification of data collected for the sero survey in Delhi and its analysis is being done. As many as 22,800 blood samples were collected for this particular sero survey till 5 July.

The health ministry said that the national covid-19 fatality rate is 2.6% and it is coming down.

The WHO DG emphasised on the need for leadership, community participation, and collective solidarity.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) praised the efforts taken to contain the coronavirus in Mumbai's Dharavi while saying that only aggressive action combined with national unity and global solidarity can turn this pandemic around.

"There are many examples from around the world that have shown that even if the outbreak is very intense, it can still be brought back under control," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO DG. "And some of these examples are Italy, Spain, and South Korea, and even in Dharavi - a densely packed area in the megacity of Mumbai - a strong focus on community engagement and the basics of testing, tracing, isolating and treating all those that are sick is key to breaking the chains of transmission and suppressing the virus," the UN Health Body Chief.

The WHO DG emphasized on the need for leadership, community participation and collective solidarity.

The tally of coronavirus cases in Mumbai rose to 88,795 on Thursday with 1,282 new patients being reported, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said

Mint COVID Tracker: At the current pace, India’s coronavirus tally could hit 1 million in seven days

Assam is now reporting the second biggest growth rate in active cases as well as deaths among major states, after Karnataka

India’s total coronavirus case tally is set to hit the 1 million mark by next Friday if it continues to rise at the same pace as since mid-June, a Mint analysis based on the latest health ministry data showed. During this period, cases have been growing at an average daily growth rate of 3.5%, taking the total number close to 800,000 now.

Overall, India has 276,685 active cases—or patients still under treatment—as of Friday morning, while 21,604 deaths have been attributed to the infection, the latest health ministry data showed. Active cases rose 20% in the last seven days, in line with the week-ago period (26 June to 3 July). The seven-day spike in deaths is 19%, compared to 20% in the preceding week. The seven-day rolling averages have been considered for these calculations since they minimize the effect of volatile and delayed reporting.

Over the past few weeks, new infections and deaths have been rising faster in India than in most other badly-hit countries. The country has the third-highest number of active cases, after the United States and Brazil. The toll is the eighth highest in the world. Among high-fatality countries (more than 5,000 deaths), India has recorded the biggest spike in deaths as well as active cases over the past week.

With cases rising, India’s health facilities and workforce continue to be under severe strain.
